Our Mirrors

If you notice when you walk into our salon, unlike most other salons, we don’t have the usual matching mirrors at our stations. Not fancy backlit mirrors from some high-end salon company. No… each mirror is different. Unique. This wasn’t by accident. There was a purpose behind it.
I didn’t want to be “just another salon in town.” I wanted a place people would call their happy place. I wanted a place where women could come to celebrate, laugh, cry, relax, revitalize, pray, or simply just be.
The mirrors ended up being more important than I ever realized. One day, it dawned on me… these mirrors represented not only me and my team, but also my clients.
Months before we even opened our doors, I spent hours on Facebook Marketplace looking for the perfect mirrors. Mind you, I didn’t even have a salon yet. Just a shell of a building and a signed lease. But for some reason, I NEEDED to find the perfect mirrors.
One by one, I scrolled. “Is this still available?” Some were only 10 minutes from my house. Others I drove three hours after work to pick up. I found myself in some of the scariest parts of town. I met some very interesting people. More often than not, my husband rolled his eyes and tracked my location because I always “forgot” to ask how far away the mirrors were before I agreed to buy them.
One mirror was A LOT bigger than I anticipated. I mean, I’m just a girl, so naturally I didn’t actually read the measurements. It wouldn’t fit in my car. I had to take the car seats out and fold down both middle seats. Well, I pulled the seat handle a little harder than I should have, and it completely broke off. So imagine the Tetris skills I had to use to fit a very large and very breakable mirror into my car with only one middle seat folded down and two car seats still inside. But somehow, I managed.
Another mirror was in an older neighborhood just outside downtown Fort Worth. What I didn’t realize was that the gentleman selling it didn’t speak English. When I pulled up, much to both of our surprise, we couldn’t understand each other. We tried using Google Translate to communicate and figure out payment. He hadn’t mentioned that it was cash only, so after a very confusing conversation through our phones, I had to drive what felt like forever to find a bank, get cash, and then find my way back to him.
But I did it.
I share these stories because these mirrors came from random places and random people I simply happened to come across. I have no idea how old they are. I don’t know if they’ve been owned by two people or fifty. I don’t know their history, the things they’ve seen, or the reflections they’ve held over the years.
I just know they are unique, worthy, and beautiful. That’s it.
And in many ways, these mirrors are like the people who walk into my salon. I don’t know their stories. I don’t know their history or everything they’ve been through. But they are here for one reason or another.
And just like these mirrors, they are unique, worthy, and beautiful.
